I registered for the Gillette Landmark Competition yesterday. I filled out the registration info page clicked submit, then just got bounced back to the welcome page with no confirmation of registration.  Is there a problem with the site?

I am an architecture student from SYRIA. Can I register in this competition?

The only individuals that cannot register for this competition are the employees of the architectural and engineering teams that are executing the renovation of the World Shaving Headquarters.

Will a 3D file of the P&G/Gillette Building be provided?

A three-dimensional file of the P&G/Gillette facility will not be made available, however we have provided a 3D sketch that provides dimensions for the adjacent buildings.  Please find this image under Downloads on the Project Details page.

Is it possible to get high resolution pictures of the renderings for the new addition to the Gillette Campus?

We have added a link enabling the download of high resolution files of some of the images seen on the website. Please find this link on the Project Details page under the Proposed Construction category.

Is it possible to get a site plan that includes the location for the sculpture along with the new buildings?

We already have a site plan that details the location for the sculpture.  The two images under Site Map on the Project Details page show two scales of the proposed site plan.  The blue dot designates that area that the landmark will be placed.  In addition, below these two images there is a link to a dwg file and a pdf file that shows the competition limits with overall dimensions.

Would it be possible to obtain a vector file of the P&G logo, as well as of the Gillette name?

Downloads of the P&G/Gillette logos are now available in .AI and jpg formats.  Please see the link under Image Downloads on the Project Details page.

Will the F Dock have a different use?

What is happening in the paved area in front of F dock?

What is the status of the tree that exists there currently?

The F Dock will be converted into a fitness center for the employees of the site.  Glass windows will fill the areas where the dock openings currently are.  The area in front of the existing docks will be landscaped. The existing tree and concrete seat wall, as seen in the existing photographs, will be removed in the renovation process.  We have included an additional rendering to illustrate the new use of this area.  Please see this rendering under Proposed Construction on the Project Details page.

What is the height of the building right behind the project area?
We have added a 3D sketch that provides dimensions for the adjacent buildings.  Please find this image under Downloads on the Project Details page.

In the existing photos, there is a bus shelter near the proposed landmark site. This seems relevant in the interest of getting employees and visitors to the campus in lieu of using personal vehicles. In the redeveloped campus or neighborhood, where is the bus shelter to be relocated?

The shelter that is seen in the photos is an existing taxi stand used by employees and visitors of the World Shaving Headquarters.  In the renovated project a new vehicle entrance will allow taxi and other vehicular traffic to pick up employees and visitors directly at the lobby entrance, rendering this structure unnecessary.  It will be removed when the new lobby and vehicle entrance is complete.  Access to public transportation is readily available near this site.

Is there any guideline as to the maximum height of the sculpture and the proximity to the building, walkway, etc. The Guideline PDF shows an ellipse that encroaches in the public walkway.

The ellipse on the downloadable site drawing shows a general area in which the sculpture can be placed.  The sculpture should not touch or be supported by the adjacent building, nor should it encroach over the existing sidewalk. The height of the sculpture is at the discretion of the designer.  There are no specific height requirements.

Is the proposed location for a two dimensional painting on the wall or a free standing sculpture in front of the wall.

The proposed location is for a free standing sculpture in front of the wall.  The existing wall will be clad with metal panels and metal louvers as part of the renovation process.

Will this be an exterior exhibit?  What medium of work is preferred? What type of product should be used?

The sculpture will be installed outdoors.  The material(s) chosen for the fabrication piece are at the discretion of the designer.

Are there material/weather conditions restrictions? Can the piece incorporate lights, water etc. or be kinetic?

Lights and or water may be incorporated into the design, however the designer should be aware of local climate conditions and should understand the implications and feasibility of these aspects of the design. As stated in the design criteria, the submissions will be judged on Constructability and Longevity: Ability to be cleanly executed and withstand permanent installation outdoors in a public area.

Can I submit a sculpture proposal of an existing sculpture?

You may submit a proposal of an existing sculpture providing that you were the author or designer of the said piece.  The entry should comply with all requirements including meeting the design objective of: Fitting with the P&G Corporate Brand Philosopy and interperative approach of the Gillette Brand essence.  P&G/Gillette is seeking a unique landmark - the proposed entry should be one of a kind and should not be a duplicate, therefore it must be feasible for the original sculpture to be moved to the South Boston site.

Are you looking simply for a piece of sculpture, or are you looking for an architectural landmark, not necessarily a building?

The Welcome page of the competition website states that P&G Gillette is launching a competition for a signature sculpture or landmark icon. It is at the discretion of the designer to interpret what they envision as a signature sculpture of landmark for this site. There is no need for any additional building program.

Is there any limitation to scale? Are there any height restrictions?

What are the ideal dimensions? What is the approximate area in sq. ft. available for installation of the winning sculpture?
The competition limits have been clarified on the images and downloads found on the Project Details page.  There are no height or scale restrictions.

Is the work to have signage on it?  Is text allowed?

The use of text or logos on the landmark is allowed, but is at the discretion of the designer.  It should be noted that this piece is not intended to be the sign or address marker for the site.  There is a site identification sign proposed for the median of the entrance drive.

Is the landscaping around the project also within the scope of this competition?

Landscaping for the Gillette site is not within the scope of this competition, however, if a landscaping solution contributes to your design or addresses the design criteria it can be proposed as a design solution or component of your design.

How accessible will this area and sculpture be to the public? Can the public only catch a glimpse of it from afar or can individuals actually approach the sculpture up close?

The sculpture will sit along a public pedestrian path adjacent to a city street , individuals will have access to it.

Is the award money only meant to pay for the idea or concept?  Does the Prize money include costs for fabrication? Is the first prize inclusive of creation, shipment and mounting expenses or will you pay additional fees to the chosen sculptor?

The prize money is the award for the idea /concept design, and is payable to the winners without expectation of further work.  Gillette will oversee the fabrication and installation of the chosen work at their cost. The winning individual or team is not expected to manage the construction process.

Will the winning designer be brought in as a consultant to oversee its fabrication?  Will Gillette retain the right to alter the selected artwork to accommodate the all over Gillette concept?

It is the expectation of the jury that there will many high quality designs that meet the intended criteria on all counts, and that the winning design will not require alteration.  Should there be a design selected that meets a baseline intent of the design criteria, but needs adjustment to comply to all criteria, Gillette reserves the authority to make such adjustments/modifications to the design.   Further involvement of the winning designer beyond the competition phase is at the discretion of P&G/Gillette and the winning designer, and shall be based on a mutual agreement.

What is the allocated budget for this project?
It this time no budget has been established. A final budget will be determined after the competition is concluded.

Will the authorship of the artwork or design be attributed to the winner or will it be branded as Gillette? And, finally does the artist retain copyright of the piece or will Gillette own it outright?

At this time no budget has been established. A final budget will be determined after the competition is concluded.

Can I draw by hand or do I need to draw with computer software such as photoshop, illustrator or 3D?
The methodology used to convey design ideas is not prescribed and is at the discretion of the designer.

Can I send the boards rolled in a cylindrical container?

The submission requirements indicate that (2) 24x36 boards are to be submitted on light-weight foam core.  The method of shipment is at the discretion of the entrant.

Is it possible to submit entry via e-mail?
The submission requirements indicate that (2) 24x36 boards are to be submitted on light-weight foam core.  This requirement stands.  There are businesses in the Boston area that may be able to print your digital file, mount to boards, and deliver to the appropriate address. It is the entrant’s responsibility to facilitate this work and to pay all fees relative to this form of submission.

Can more than one idea can be submitted by the same person?
Multiple entries are acceptable from the same designer. Each entry must be submitted as a separate entry and will receive a separate Identification number.

Where do I find the registration form to place in the envelope on the back of each board?  What address should I mail my submissions to?

We will provide a downloadable registration form and the submission address after the close of registrations (October 6, 2008).  The address will be a Boston, Massachusetts, USA location.
